Funeral Service for Ione N. "Goodbird" Eagle, Zica HowasteWin, "Squirrel Women with a Pretty Voice, 97, of Waubay, SD will be held on Tuesday, June 18, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at the Eagle Family Residence, Waubay, SD with Christen/Traditionalist officiating. Pallbearers will be Zitka Mockicin, Jonny LaBatte, Isaiah Soldier, Justin Kongi, Fletcher Eagle, Jeremiah Gray, Joseph LaBelle, Travis Morrison, Tyler Morrison, Antoine Eagle, Nazareth Eagle, Blair Ryan, Caleb Johnson, Ives Eagle Jr., Benji Eagle, Chance Eagle, Kenny Eagle, Mikey Eagle, Jared Eagle, Steve YellowEarrings. Honorary Pallbearers will be Barb Ryan, Myra Bendickson, Marlys Robertson, Ruby Shoestring, Mary Keeble, Sister Mary Condon, Celine Buckanaga, Marcella Haug, Bixie Iron Cloud, Cleo Rouse, Marsha Renville, Marie Renville, Lillian Wanna, Pasty Seaboy, Lillian Owen, Patty Blue, Dr. Lola Pollard, Nurses Laura Frankenhoff and Tammy Langager, Lorraine Rousseau, Yvonne Bear, Joanne LaBatte. Special Music will be by all Local Drum/Singers Welcome. There will be Wake Services on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, June 14, 15, 16, 2019 at the Enemy Swim Community Center at 7:00 P.M. Monday night Wake Service will be held at the Eagle Family Residence at 7:00PM on Monday, June 17, 2019. Interment will be at the Eagle Family Cemetery. Ione passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2019 at her residence in Waubay, SD.
Kunsi was born in rural Veblen area on August 21, 1921 to Ida Williams and Joe Wanna. Eli Goodbird raised her, and she attended school in Wahpeton, ND, Pierre, SD and Stephan, SD. In 1942, she married Benjamin R. Eagle. Out of this union was born nine children. As a mother, she also raised her grandchildren Ursula Eagle, Sam Eagle, Bertilla Eagle, Anysia Eagle, Benjamin Eagle, and also great grandchildren Nicole LaBelle, Jessica LaBelle, Joseph LaBelle, Lana LaBella, and one great great grandchild Ariana Joy LaBelle.
Ione loved attending camp revivals. She also hosted many of them at her home or down at Blue Dog Lake. Ione worked for Landsburgers for some years, then she became a CHR Representative, after her service for CHR she became the Enemy Swim Council Women. After her term as council women she became a homemaker for her children, grandchildren, and many great grandchildren. She loved making homemade pies, baked goods, sewing star quilts, crazy quilts, and sometimes making her own clothes. Ione was also known for her fast driving, especially going to Bingo which she was given the title "Ione the road" Eagle. She also loved to give encouraging words to people who needed words of wisdom or encouragement. She had many stories to share. Where she helped the THPO office with these stories and the Dakota Language (Fluent) and she was very knowledgeable in her Dakota history. Ione was "Kunsi" to everyone and she will be greatly missed by all.
Ione is survived by her children John (Cleo) Eagle, Bernadette Mockicin, Violet Eagle, Angeline Eagle, Cletus Eagle, Imelda Eagle, and Ives Eagle all of Blue Dog Lake; 41 grandchildren and 88 great grandchildren, and 24 great-great- grandchildren.
Ione was preceded in death by her parents Ida Williams Paul, Joe Wanna, Eli Goodbird; husband Benjamin R. Eagle; son Anthony "Tony" Eagle; daughter Philomine North Peigan, Samuel Eagle, Bertilla Eagle, Benjamin Eagle.
