Funeral Service for Helen Jane Godfrey, "Ni Ċante Oyutan Win" she touches your heart woman, 74 of Sisseton, SD will be held on Monday, December 4, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. final viewing will be at the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Tribal Community Center, Agency Village, SD at 1:00 P.M. then move to St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Agency Village, SD with Fr. Charles Chan and Episcopal Lay Readers. Pianist will be Mary Beth Kirk and Billy Kohl and drum group will be Old Agency Singers. Pallbearers will be Rex Godfrey, Randy Godfrey, Richard Hill, Dion Bernard, Robert Laughter III and Jace Starr. Honorary Pallbearers will be All of Helen's Friends and Relatives. Drum Group will be Old Agency Singers. Interment will be in the St. Mary's Episcopal Cemetery. Wake Services will be held at the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Community Center, Agency Village, SD at 7:00 P.M. on Saturday 2, 2017 and an all night wake on Sunday, December 3, 2017. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of funeral arrangements.
Helen Jane (Robertson) Godfrey was born to Daniel Ernest and Dormalie (Owen) Robertson on December 7, 1942 in Sisseton, SD. She attended Veblen public School, Old Agency Day School and graduated from Flandreau Indian School in May 1961. After high school she attended Stewarts School of Hairstyling in Aberdeen, SD. She then moved to Mission, SD and worked as a cook at Bishop Hare Home for Boys. While there she met and married Edward Godfrey on December 31, 1965. The couple moved to Mission, SD and from there they moved to Sioux City, IA. The couple moved back to Sisseton, SD where Ed was employed at Dakota Pride in 1977. Helen worked and managed the SWO canning center. Helen later worked for DNG for many years and retired 2011. She was a member of the SWO Council from July 1995 to January 1997. Helen helped raise her grandchildren and was active in Tribal Politics. Helen passed away at CDP on Nov. 28 th , 2017. Her biggest joy was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Helen is survived by her children, Bruce Godfrey Sr. of Sisseton, SD, Carrie Godfrey of Sisseton, SD and Dawn Godfrey of New Effington, SD; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Georgia Robertson of Peever, SD, Norma Perko of Big Coulee, SD and Ruth Ellen Robertson of Sisseton, SD; one brother Bruce Robertson Sr. of Big Coulee, SD; numerous nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Cleone Provost and maternal and paternal grandparents.
