Funeral service for Helen Arlene Engevik, 89, of Eden, SD, will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at Buffalo Lake Lutheran Church in rural Eden, SD, with Pastor Dick Grorud officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 9, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Cahill Funeral Chapel in Sisseton. Interment will be at Buffalo Lake Lutheran Cemetery in rural Eden. Pianist will be Sheila Oreskovich with special music by Christina and Marretta Osthus. Pallbearers will be Bill Malcolm, Marlyn Lindahl, Leonard Johnson, Kevin Valnes, Rory Iverson, and David Hovland. Honorary pallbearers will be all of Helen's friends and neighbors.
Helen Arlene Evjen was born on December 25, 1920 at Troy, SD, to John and Agnes (Osterkil) Evjen, the second oldest of nine children. She attended Troy school through 8th grade while she worked for the Aaronsons family. She worked for a time on NYA, in Watertown as a housekeeper for Rev. Oscar Hanson, and later in Sioux Falls for the Lyle Olson family.

On November 28, 1948, Helen married Soren Engevik at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Troy, SD. The couple lived on the southeast corner of Buffalo Lake near Eden where they farmed and raised Angus cattle. They lived there until the fall of 2003, when they moved to the Tekakwitha Nursing Center in Sisseton.

Helen was a member of Buffalo Lake Lutheran Church where she took part in Ladies Aid and the activities they sponsored. Helen enjoyed her family, visiting with friends, reading, singing and listening to music. She will be remembered as a person who prayed. She prayed every night before she went to sleep for family, friends, the staff at the Tekakwitha Nursing Center, pastors she knew, and government officials. She reminded people when she saw them that she was praying for them!
Helen passed away on April 5, 2010 at the Tekakwitha Nursing Center in Sisseton, SD at the age of 89.

Helen is survived by five children: Luther Engevik of Eden, SD; Maurice Engevik of Eden, SD; Katherine (David) Osthus of Eagan, MN; Marshall (Lori) Engevik of St. Cloud, MN; and Albert Engevik of Watertown, MN; six grand children: Christina Osthus of Eagle Butte, SD; Julia, Michael and Marretta Osthus of Eagan, MN; and Marit and Isaac Engevik of St. Cloud, MN; two brothers: Raynard (Marilyn) Evjen of Stockholm, SD; and John (Joyce) Evjen, of Lake Mills, IA; one sister: Vivian Larson of Watertown, SD; two sisters-in-law: Joyce Evjen of Strandburg, SD and Dorothy Barck, of Marshall, MN.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Soren, in 2006; her parents; twin infant sons, Ole John and John Ole; two brothers Lloyd Evjen, and Loyal Evjen; and three sisters: Nordis Van Horn, Ruth Haugen, and Adelle Kucker.
