Funeral Service for Hazel E. (Haugen) Nelson, 93, of Sisseton, SD will be held on Friday, November 18, 2011 at 10:30 AM at the Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, SD with the Rev. William Schruba officiating. Organist will be Estelle Pearson and soloist will be Aaron Deutsch. Pallbearers will be Larry Lee, Keith Lee, Raymond Sandvold, Dennis Stark, Sherman Hannasch, and Kenneth Hannasch. Honorary Pallbearers will be all of Hazel's Family and Friends and the Staff of The Tekakwitha Living Center. Interment will be in the Concordia Lutheran Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. There will be visitation on Thursday, November 17, 2011 from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM followed by a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM.
Hazel Evelyn Haugen was born to Paul K. and Emma (Moe) Haugen on April 20, 1918. She was born and raised near Corinth, ND. She was confirmed at East Updahl Lutheran Church Corinth, ND on September 4, 1932. She attended school at Divide County North Dakota where she graduated from the eighth grade. As a teenager she moved to Sisseton. Hazel worked for John Hanson and Edwin Hagen caring for their children and as a house keeper. On June 9, 1938 Hazel was united in marriage to Theodore Nelson at Sisseton, SD and to this union five children were born. They lived and farmed in Grant Township. Hazel loved to cook and bake, having all her family, friends, and neighbors stop by to visit and have a meal. She lived on the farm for 67 years until 2005 at the age of eighty four, she moved into the Tekakwitha Apartments. August of 2010 she entered the Tekakwitha Living Center where she received excellent love and care while a resident there. Hazel was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, when the church closed she became a member of the Grace Lutheran Church. Hazel passed away on November 14, 2011 at the Tekakwitha Living Center, Sisseton, SD surrounded by her loving family.
Honored to have shared her life; her children, Dewain (Dorothy) Nelson of Browns Valley, MN, Donald (Barbara) Nelson of Sisseton, SD; one daughter, Joyce (James) Pickthorn of Sisseton, SD; her grandchildren; Brad(Rita) Nelson of Florence, SD, Julie (Kleon) Kvatum of Wilmot, SD, David (Jackie) Nelson of Browns Valley, MN, Andrea White of Sisseton, SD, Eric (Maureen) Nelson of Sisseton, SD, Carrie (Aarik) Gray of Sisseton, SD, Jay Pickthorn of Sioux Falls, SD; her great-grandchildren; Chantel and Jared Nelson, Reese and Heath Kvatum, Heather, Miranda, Hailey and Tara Nelson, Ryder and Briann White, Mason and Reed Gray, as well as several beloved nieces, nephews and many friends.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband; Theodore (1988); two sons, Garry (1993) and Joel (2005); her parents and sisters: Sarah (in infancy), Selma Lee and Larrain Dempsey; and one great granddaughter Ashley Jean Nelson in 1994.
