Funeral Service for Harley Edward Deutsch, 71, of Sisseton, SD will be held on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at 10:30 AM at Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, SD with Rev. Jeffrey Kalb officiating. Organist will be Clarice Arbach with soloist Aaron Deutsch. Pallbearers will be Tim Siegel, Adam Deutsch, Rick Oien, Eric Deutsch, Patrick Deutsch Jr, and Justin Deutsch. Honorary Pallbearers will be "All of Harley's grandchildren, golfing and bowling buddies, the coffee and card playing buds, the Sisseton Fire Department and all of the past and present employees of the Sisseton Courier". Interment will be in the Sisseton Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. There will be visitation on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at the Emanuel Lutheran Church, Sisseton, SD from 3:00 to 7:00 PM with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM. There will be visitation one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Thursday.
Harley was born June 23, 1940 to Edmund and Roselyn (Laubach) Deutsch at Tekakwitha Hospital in Sisseton. He went to St. Peter's School through 6th grade and then Sisseton Public School until graduating in 1959. He attended NDSSS in Wahpeton, ND, to earn a degree in printing. He married Sylvia (Schaunaman) October 29, 1960 at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Sisseton. They had three children. They loved watching their grandchildren grow into young adults. Harley started working at the Sisseton Courier when he was 16 years old and worked there most of his life. In 1993, he fulfilled his dream of owning the Sisseton Courier. Their sons joined the business with Harley and Sylvia. He had been semi-retired for the last couple years. He took an active part in the planning of the Sisseton Athletic complex. He loved watching High School sports, especially his children and grandchildren. He continued being a faithful follower of Sisseton High School events. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, bowling, bean bag toss, watching sports, taking pictures, playing cards, dancing, spending time with his family, good food, and playing with puppies and children. He liked music (especially Polka music) and loved to sing. He was a volunteer fireman for 25 years. Harley was Secretary/Treasurer of Sisseton Men's Bowling Association for 25 plus years. He was a member of Kiwanis for 18 years, past president and member of the Sisseton Area Chamber of Commerce. He was a Sunday School teacher/Superintendant, Trustee, Elder and on various boards of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Sisseton. He passed away suddenly on December 23, 2011 at Coteau des Prairies Hospital, Sisseton, SD
Harley is survived by his wife Sylvia Deutsch of Sisseton, SD, three children Teresa Skubic, Kevin and Rhonda Deutsch, and Jason Deutsch and Amber Cooper all of Sisseton, SD; two sisters Cleone Siegel of Wheaton, MN, and Mary Jo Oien of Sisseton, SD; four brothers Patrick Deutsch Sr. of Sisseton, SD, Roger and Sue Deutsch of Parker, SD, Terry and Cheryl Deutsch of Sisseton, SD, and Scott Deutsch of Sisseton, SD; four grandchildren Jocelyn and Brandon Adams, Zachary Deutsch, Kimberly Skubic and fiancé Dalton McDaniel, and Kayla Skubic all of Sisseton, SD; Nicholas Adams of Sisseton, SD. Harley was preceded in death by his parents, one infant sister Rose Marie, two brothers in-law Richard Oien and Laurel Siegel and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
