Gordon Dean Nieland was born on March 23rd, 1932 in Browns Valley, Minnesota to Alfred and Esther (Oksoll) Nieland. He grew up on the family farm east of Sisseton and attended Grant No.4 - a rural school- until 8th grade. After grade school, Gordon continued to work on the family farm and developed his passion for farming. On January 6th, 1955, Gordon enlisted in the US Army serving as a wheeled vehicle mechanic at Fort Ord, California and Fort Carson, Colorado. During his time in the Army, Gordon obtained his high school equivalency certificate (GED) and completed one year of college credits. On December 14th, 1956, Gordon was honorably discharged from the Army having attained the rank of Specialist 3rd Class. In addition, Gordon was awarded the Good Conduct Medal for exemplary behavior, efficiency and fidelity in active service. Upon completion of his military service, Gordon returned to South Dakota to help run the family farm. Shortly thereafter, Gordon met the love of his life - Janet Kelly and they were married on January 19th, 1963 at Grace Lutheran Church. The couple lived their entire married life and raised their two sons - Jeffery and Daniel - on the family farm east of Sisseton. After 45 years of marriage, Gordon lost his beloved wife, Janet, to illness on March 21, 2008. Gordon enjoyed spending time with family, friends and playing pinochle. He was especially fond of spending time with his five grandchildren - celebrating special events, wheelbarrow rides and sporting events to name a few. Ultimately, Gordon was passionate about farming and was able to enjoy his life's passion by farming right-up to the end of his life. In addition, Gordon was a long time member of Grace Lutheran Church and served as an usher for over forty years.
On November 7th, 2017, after a long, hard fought battle with cancer, Gordon passed away at the Sisseton Hospital.
