Gene Herman Determan's Obituary
Memorial Service for Gene Determan, 88 of Sisseton, SD will be held on Friday, September 12, 2014 at 1:00 P.M. at the Roberts County 4~H Building with Rory Iverson officiating. Music will be provided by Joshua Anderson. There will be visitation one hour prior to the Memorial Service.
Eugene Herman Determan was born on October 31, 1925 to Herman and Margaret (Hensel) Determan. He attended country school in Minnesota. When he was a teenager the family moved Northwest of Sisseton. On March 5, 1945 Gene was united in marriage to Carol Heitman in Sisseton, SD. They made their home on the farm where they farmed and milked cows for eight years. They moved to El Centro, CA where they lived and Gene did mechanic work and managed a gas station. They then moved to Pacoima, CA where he worked for So-Cal Ford Tractor in the Parts Dept. and Equipment Sales. He owned and operated Valley Wide Backhoe for twelve years retiring in 1974. While living in California he played a Big Bass instrument in a Blue Grass Band called the In Laws and Out Laws. In 1975 they moved home to Sisseton, where he graded roads, dug basements, cleaned feedlots, and did custom combing using an International Combine. He retired in 1987. He loved fishing, hunting, dancing, working on antique cars and tractors and snowmobiling. He also loved to play pinochle and shack 654 with his friends. Gene passed away at his home on September 1, 2014.
Gene is survived by his wife, Carol Determan of Sisseton, SD; three children, Jenny Scamihorn of Terre Haute, IN, Linda and husband, Michael Stuber of Sun Valley, CA, and Leslie and wife, Cheryl Determan of Lancaster, CA; three brothers, Chuck Determan of Watertown, SD, Jim and wife, Sylvia Determan of Ephrato, PA, and Don and wife, Laura Determan of Mora, MN; nine grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; and one great-great grandson.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Bernard and Robert Determan; one sister Dorothy Murray; and one daughter, Judy Bjorling.
Gene will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
