Gale, son of Carl and Ethel (Gorsuch) Fladland, was born September 20, 1929 in Roberts County, SD and died August 14, 2018 at Tekakwitha Nursing Home in Sisseton, SD. Gale attended various country and one room schools near Hammer, SD. He graduated from Sisseton High School, then attended 2 years at South Dakota State University.
August 26, 1950, Gale married Eloise Marlin Anderson. He and his bride began farming near Hammer, SD, just up the hill from his parent's home. Gale and Eloise raised five children, Debra, Mark, Dawn, Dyann and Mary Jo. Gale and Eloise retired from farming and moved to Sisseton, SD in 1989.
Many activities occupied Gale's time. Not only was he a successful farmer, but was also involved in his community and church. Gale was a member of the RC Telephone board, Farmer's Union, Nidaros Cemetery board, church council, and church choirs at Faith Lutheran, New Effington and Grace Lutheran, Sisseton. Music was a big part of his life, he performed opera in college and was the soloist at many area weddings and funerals. He and Eloise loved to dance. Sisseton Corner Squares brought square dancing into the Fladland's routine and enticed Gale to become a square dance caller. Gale loved to buy, sell, and trade. He was often seen at machinery, antique, and estate sales where the auctioneers could count on him to be bidding. He also bowled, enjoyed blackjack, and "fixed" things. He proudly got a 1920's "STAR" car running, then enjoyed discussing it with admirers at area parades.
In January 2015 Gale moved into Tekakwitha where nurses, CNA's, and staff treated him as family and for that we are grateful. The leg lamp in his window will no longer glow, but will shine in our hearts for a long time.
Gale is survived by five children, Debra (David) Siegel of Orono, MN; Mark (Dianne) Fladland of Hammer, SD; Dawn (Duane) Sattler of Sisseton, SD; Dyann Fladland of Fargo, ND; and Mary Jo "MJ" (Blake) Derhak of Sisseton, SD. Also surviving are Grandchildren Zachary Fladland, Bowen Fladland, Dillen (Lori) Rikimoto, Dallas (Amber German) Rikimoto, Alicen (Loren Steffens) Fladland, Andrew (Emilia) McGregor, Cory (Lisa) Sattler, Jason (Michele) Sattler, Shane Sattler and thirteen great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Barb Fladland and Carolyn Fladland; brother-in-law Perry Anderson, and brother and sister-in-law Harold and Audrey Flones.
Gale was preceded in death by his parents, wife Eloise, grandson Charles McGregor, granddaughter Katy Fladland, brother Lane Fladland, sister-in-law Valdeen Anderson, and his father and mother-in-law, Elmer and Margie Anderson.
