Obituary

Funeral Mass for Francis Xavier Eagle, 68, of Waubay, SD will be held on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at 1:00 P.M. at St. Peters Catholic Church, Sisseton, SD with Rev. Fr. Gregg Frankman celebrant. Pianist will be Billy Kohl. Pallbearers will be Brad Dilworth, Jasiah Redbear, Gabe Fisher, Robbie Gill, Lawren Barse, and Mike Peters. Honorary Pallbearers will be Helmina Makes Him First, Lois Owens, Pat Gill-Eagle, Lillian Owen, Teresa Peters and the Wambdi Hedeska Sundance. Interment will be in St. Benedict's Catholic Cemetery, Sisseton, South Dakota. Military rites will be provided by the Kit Fox Society. There will be visitation from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM at the church. Masks and social distancing are required. The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton, SD is in charge of arrangements.

Francis Xavier Eagle, Tate Yuhomni Wicasta, (Whirlwind Man) was born on February 6, 1952 To Elijah and Clara (DeMarrais) Eagle Sr. at Sisseton SD. He lived in the Sisseton area where he Attended School until he was 17 years old when he enlisted in the Army in 1969 -1972. He served In Vietnam and attained the rank of PFC. When he returned to South Dakota, he met and married Lois Owen. From this union Tracy Xavier, Sarah Nicole, Daniel Keith and Jared Dean were born. He worked at the Tribal roads Dept., then He was also a bus driver for the Enemy Swim school along with various other occupations on the Area. Francis dedicated the last 30 years following the Canku Duta/Red Road. He was a pipe carrier and Became a Spiritual leader for Wambdi Hedeska. He supported and was involved in many walks such As the Dakota 38 + 2 Memorial Rides. Recently starting of the Whitestone Hill Ride. Francis was the epitome of Iktaywicasta ( Common Man) in the truest sense of the word. He was a Gentle, caring and humble man.He was a member of the Kit Fox Vietnam war veterans and participated in many Grand entries and Military events. Francis enjoyed traveling, going to bingo and casinos. He especially enjoyed spending time with his Children and grandchildren. He had a very wry sense of humor that made you laugh

He is survived by his daughter Sarah and son Jared; five grandchildren; Sisters Bernadine Gaikowski, Kathy Barse, Charlotte Grey, Donna and (Merle) Redbear and Brother Patrick and (Kelly) Eagle. And Many Nieces, nephews and Cousins. He also had a special friend Helmina Makes Him First along with many relatives and friends on the Standing Rock Reservation. His father Elijah Eagle had 2 sisters living in Little Eagle and Bullhead SD.

Francis was preceded in death by his sons Tracy and Daniel, Parents Elijah and Clara Eagle, Sisters Marcella, Florence, Nadine and Theodora. Plus two brothers Elijah Jr and Martin, and a grandson Daniel Xavier Birney .
