Funeral services for Elroy A. Dahlberg, 81, of Sisseton, SD will be held on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. in the Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, SD with Rev. Cheryl Rondeau-Bassett officiating. Interment will be in the Sisseton Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Rodney Dalberg, Paul Johnson, Wayne Fonder, Tom Rice, Doug Mundt and Tim Rice. Honorary pallbearers will be VFW and American Legion members and his coffee buddies at Billy's Café. Military rites will be provided by the Fort Sisseton VFW Post #3342 and Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50. Visitation on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. with a 7:00 P.M. Prayer Service at Cahill Funeral Chapel. The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton is in charge of arrangements.
Elroy was born on July 12, 1934 in Norway Township to Henry and Iva (Holland) Dalberg. He was baptized and confirmed in the Bethel Lutheran Church. He attended grade school in rural Norway Township and graduated from Sisseton High School in 1952. Elroy met the love of his life, Dorothy Rice and they were united in marriage on September 29, 1956. They made their home in Sisseton. Born to this union were two children, Jeffrey in 1957 and Janelle in 1963. Elroy worked in road construction for a few months and then was drafted into the army and did his basic training in Fort Ord, California and was then sent overseas to Korea in 1956. During his Korean service he was assigned as a staff car driver and chauffeured many dignitaries, 2, 3, 4 and 5 Star Generals and the President of South Korea, Sig Mon Rhee. He was always proud of the fact that he was the chauffeur for movie star Jane Mansfield at the Bob Hope Christmas show in 1957. After serving his time in Korea he was stationed in Colorado Springs, Colorado where he received an honorable discharge.
After the service Elroy returned home to farm with his father and brother Orvey. After his father passed away, Elroy and Orvey farmed together for several years until Orvey retired and then Elroy managed the farm. Elroy was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and was an active member with the VFW and served as Commander and several other offices.
Elroy passed away on June 18, 2016 at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota after poor health the last couple of years.
Elroy enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards and shaking dice. He most enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the little ones.
Elroy is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Sisseton; one son, Jeffrey (Debbie) of Aberdeen, SD; and daughter, Janelle Wiese (Bradley) of Wahpeton, ND; six grandchildren, Tracey Pfeiffer (Eric), Ashley Gervais (Bryan), Nathan Dahlberg, Dustin Wiese, Terra Wiese (Kyle), Chelsa Wiese (Trevor); four great grandchildren, Mackenzie, Ethan, Jessen and Farrin.
Elroy was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Orvey, Donald and Marvin; two sisters, Corrine Johnson and Viola Dalberg.
