Obituary

Memorial services for Dorothea Stavig, 96, formerly of Sisseton, SD will be on Saturday, 2/20/2010 at 11:00 AM at Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, SD with the Rev. William Schruba officiating. Interment will be in the Sisseton Cemetery.
Dorothea Ann Appel was born to Pastor Hans and Frieda Appel on February 21, 1913 in Holloway, MN.

When Dorothea was 7, her father was called to Jeffers, MN, for 3 years, and then to Buffalo Lake, MN, where Dorothea finished grade school and high school. She attended St. Olaf College for 2 years and then moved to Minneapolis and worked as a secretary for Macphail School of Music where she also took piano and organ lessons.

During WWII, she served with the American Red Cross in the Philippines and in Japan after the surrender.

Dorothea and Clifford Stavig were married by her father in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Buffalo Lake, MN, on January 26, 1947. They made their home in Sisseton, where Clifford was a member of the Stavig Bros. Department Store firm.

They were members of Grace Lutheran Church, where Dorothea was an organist for many years. Her love of music prompted her to teach both piano and organ, and over the years she gave lessons to a great many students in the Sisseton area. Dorothea took great satisfaction in knowing that many of those little fingers, now grown up, continue to bring the joy of music to those around them.

After Cliff's death in 1983, she moved to Edina, MN, and became a member of Woodlake Lutheran Church in Richfield.

Dorothea was preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers, Erhard and Walter Appel; sister Louise; husband Clifford, and son Andrew. She is survived by son Bob and his wife Vicki, and 2 grandchildren: Christina Just (Rob), and Michael.
