Funeral Service for Doris B. Vig, 85, of Sisseton, SD will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. at the Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD with the Rev. Vern Donnell officiating. Pianist will be June Evenson, with special music by Krystal Williams. Pallbearers will be Joel Vig, John VanBrocklin, Billy Rice, and Irv Slaamot. Interment will be in the Goodwill Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. There will be visitation one hour prior to services at the chapel. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of arrangements.
We lost our beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend on Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at the age of 85. Doris was born to Knute and Kate Knudtson on May 15, 1929 near Sisseton, South Dakota. Doris is survived by her loving husband, LeRoy Vig of Sisseton, South Dakota (currently residing at the Golden Living Center in Groton, South Dakota); her son, Joel Vig of Cocoa, Florida; her daughter, Carrie Mowry of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and her brothers Marvin Knudtson of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Gilbert Knudtston of Arizona.
Doris graduated from Sisseton High School in 1947. She was approached by a school board member and offered a teaching position. Becoming an educator was Doris's special hope and dream. She attended college in Aberdeen to fulfill this dream. She married her childhood sweetheart, LeRoy, on December 9, 1950 and their love story has persevered for 64 years. Early in their marriage, LeRoy was drafted to serve in the Korean War and they packed up their car and moved to California. Doris went on to receive her Master's degree in 1965 and by 1982 was just shy of her Doctorate of Education. She taught elementary school for almost 50 years while at the same time teaching English as a Second Language to adult students in the evenings. LeRoy and Doris moved back to Sisseton, South Dakota in 2003 returning to their hometown after 50 years of living in near Los Angeles, California.
Doris was a generous philanthropist throughout her life, donating to several Christian and humanitarian causes around the world. Doris will be remembered for her lifetime commitment to teaching thousands of children and adults, her wisdom brought on by extensive education and a highly inquisitive intellect, her love of reading, and an enduring love for her family, friends, and most of all, her Lord, Jesus Christ.
In memory of Doris, the family asks that any donations be made to the Alzheimer's Care Unit at the Golden Living Center in Groton, South Dakota where her beloved husband resides.
