Funeral Services for Doris M. Hammer, 92 of Sisseton, SD will be held on Monday, May 20, 2013 at 10:30 AM at Grace Lutheran Church in Sisseton, SD with Rev. William Schruba officiating. Organist will be Estelle Pearson; Pianist will be Roger Pearson with soloists Aaron Deutsch and Pat Schubert. Pallbearers will be Bruce Hammer, Dan Hammer, Aric Christiansen, Jason Lotzer, Trevis Alberts, and Guy Christiansen. Honorary pallbearers will be all of Doris's Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, Friends and Relatives, Fellowship Circle, Grace Lutheran Church Quilters and Dr. Judy Beumer. Interment will be in the Sisseton Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. Visitation will be Sunday, May 19, 2013 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM with family present from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. at the Cahill Funeral Chapel in Sisseton, SD.
Doris Martha Krause, the daughter of August and Anna Bartnick Krause was born on May 13, 1921 on her parents farm north of Claire City, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church. Doris attended rural school in Norway Township of Roberts County. She graduated from Sisseton High School in 1940. Following graduation Doris enrolled in Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen and received her Teaching Certificate. She taught rural school in Norway and Minnesota Townships of Roberts County.
During World War II Doris moved to Detroit, Michigan serving her country working in a defense plant making parts for the B-52 Bomber. Following the war she returned to Sisseton and was employed at the Kermit Pederson Store, Montgomery Ward Catalog Agency and at the Sisseton Public School as a cook in the lunch room.
On October 20, 1945 after the war had ended she married Harlan Hammer, the love of her life, at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Claire City. To this union three children were born; Marilyn, Bruce and Dan. On October 20, 2012 Doris and Harlan celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. Doris was active in the GLWC where she held several offices. She was a member of Fellowship Circle and Gray Ladies. She loved spending Monday morning with the Grace Lutheran Church quilting club while enjoying the fellowship of friends. Doris was also a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary while serving local and district offices. She was also active in the VFW Auxiliary.
She enjoyed sewing, quilting, playing cards, listening to music, traveling and most enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Doris passed away on May 16, 2013 at Sanford Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD.
Doris is survived by her husband Harlan, Sisseton, SD; son Bruce (Jeani) Sisseton, SD; son Dan, Grand Forks, ND; sister Ardith Wilson (Andy), Pacific Grove, CA; brother Myron Krause (Olive), Watertown, SD. Doris is also survived by her son in law Guy Christiansen, Milnor, ND as well as four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by daughter Marilyn Christiansen, her parents, sisters Luverne Krause and Ada Krause.
