Memorial Service for Doris Briles, 84 of Sisseton, SD, will be held on Thursday, November 20th, 2008 at 11.00 AM at the Familylife Assembly of God Church, Sisseton, SD. with the Rev. Bob Beasley officiating. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of arrangements.

Doris Eileen Jones was born on May 19, 1924 of Detroit, Michigan to Walter and Ada (Northeast) Jones. Doris was the second of three siblings, children of British immigrants but the depression of the late 1920's forced the family to return to the UK where she grew up. During WWII she worked in GEC's Coventry factoring in England and was one of many volunteers who tried, but ultimately failed, to save the roof of that city's famous cathedral when the Luftwaffe bombed the city so devastatingly.

Doris was married in 1945 and her only son, Richard was born three years later. In the early 1960's she qualified as a teacher and went on to teach math and music. In the 1970's having become single again, she trained as a London Tourist Board guide and after qualifying for the coveted Blue Badge, she guided tourists, mainly American, around London, the rest of the UK and Europe.

Doris finally got a copy of her birth certificate and thus the opportunity to reclaim her US citizenship. For a while she lived in Phoenix, Arizona during breaks from working in the UK.

Doris married Phil Briles in December of 1987, and the couple made their home in Sisseton, SD. Doris had the gift of storytelling, and she could speak, write, and understand five languages. She worked for a while in Sisseton and enjoyed quilting and embroidery with her friends, she was well known for her amazing pies. Doris was very interested in the local Native American tribes and studied their history and learnt to speak to Dakota. She also enjoyed working at the Tekawitha Fine Arts Center. Doris loved to travel and made frequent trips back to England to visit family and friends.

Doris passed away on November 10, 2008 at the Tekawitha Living Center in Sisseton, SD.

Doris is survived by her son, Richard and wife Christina Stanton, of Sussex, England, three step children, David and Becky Briles of Madison, WI, Janis and Doug Hamm of Sisseton, SD, Sharon and Denny Trudell of Wahpeton, ND, and brother Robert and wife Barbara Jones of Dorset, England, one niece Nicola and husband Martin Gautier of France, two granddaughters and seven step-grandchildren, two great granddaughters, and sixteen step-great grandchildren.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister Mary.
