Funeral Services for Darrell Walter Hendricks, 85, of New Effington, SD will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at 10:30 AM at Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD with Rev. William Schruba officiating. Pallbearers will be Matt Brandenburger, David and Paulette Ceroll, Toby Magnuson, Gary Monson, and Clyde Broz. Interment will be in the Sisseton Cemetery, Sisseton, SD, with Military Rites by Read-Veflin Post #180 New Effington, SD. There will be visitation on Friday, October 2, 2009 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Cahill Funeral Chapel. Darrell was born on December 3, 1923 in Canton, SD to Walter H. and Martha C. (GoBell) Hendricks. He grew up and attended country school near Dalesburg, SD. Following his education he entered the United States Army on July 26, 1944 and served until November 10, 1945. Darrell was wounded on April 3, 1945 and earned a Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, European-African-Middle-Eastern Ribbon, Bronze Star Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. After being discharged he moved to New Effington, SD where he lived and tended to his garden. He liked to visit with folks. He entered the Tekakwitha Living Center on July 13, 2007. Darrell passed away on October 1, 2009 at the Tekakwitha Living Center.
Darrell is survived by one niece and her husband, Dorothy and Dan O' Connor of Burbank, SD; two nephews, David and wife, Mary Johnson of Lander, WY, and Doug and wife, Aurora Johnson of Dayton, OH.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Marilyn.
