Funeral Service for Charles Norby Amos, 84, of Peever, South Dakota will be held on June 28 , 2017 at 2:00 P.M.at the Big Coulee District Center, Big Coulee, SD with Rev. Vern Donnell officiating. Pianist will be Betty Spider, Billy Kohl, and Mary Beth Kirk with Special music by The Big Coulee Choir.  Pallbearers will be Lenny White, Chance Renville, Samson Bernard, Billy Kohl, Arlen Renville Jr., Kevin Amos, Lindsay White, Jeffrey Amos and Wayne Cloud. Honorary pallbearers will be Faith Schoeberl, Darrell Amos, Sr., Tim Amos, Conrad Amos, Adrian Williams, Richard Williams, Jeff Schoenrock, Donald Backman, Rev. Hunter and Barbara Keen, Mary Beth Kirk Family, Jim Whitted, Vine Marks Sr., Floyd Hayes, Benjamin Thompson, Junior Thompson, Bob Johnston, David Gill, Dennis Gill, Mickey Renville and Wheatcrest Hills Staff . Wake services will be held on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at the Big Coulee District Center at 7:00 P.M. Interment will be at the Ascension Presbyterian Cemetery, Big Coulee. Military Rites will be provided by the Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50 and Fort Sisseton Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #3342.  The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of Funeral arrangements.

Charles was born on June 1, 1933 in his home near Peever, S.D. to Norby & Flora (Phelps) Amos. Charles attended school at the Big Coulee Day School. He was Baptized in the Big Coulee Church at an early age and later joined the Church as a young adult. He joined the Army on February 1, 1952 and served during the Korean War. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with one bronze service star and the Army Sea Duty Ribbon and was honorably discharged on April 4, 1955. He was recently honored by the Republic of Korea the 'Ambassador for Peace Medal' in July 2016. In his younger days, he played Baseball with a number of young men from the community who traveled from town to town to play the game and also worked for a number of farmers around the Wilmot area as a farm hand. Charles worked various jobs including carpentry and being a freelance auto-mechanic. He was involved in building the Sisseton High School, as well as the Sisseton Wahpeton Sioux Tribes first Tribal School. His hobbies included fishing, trapping, singing in Big Coulee Choir, gardening, playing baseball and being a part of the Big Coulee Quartet singing with Albert Spider, Little Joe Heminger, Adrienne Ree, Billy Kohl and others throughout the years.

Charles was a fluent Dakotah language speaker and knew the importance of preserving the language. He contributed to the SWO Dakotah Language Institute by allowing them to record him while speaking in Dakotah. Charles was always thrilled when he had the chance to speak the language with another fluent speaker. All of his prayers were only spoken in Dakotah.

Charles was a very Active member of the Big Coulee church his entire life, holding various positions in the church. Lastly being one of the Ruling Elders.

Charles was united in marriage to Clara Small on May 20 ^th , 1955 in Wheaton, MN. To this Union, they had 11 children, 30 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his children Charles Amos Jr., Caril (Amos) & Jeff Schoenrock, Colette White-Amos, Genevieve Amos, Marlon Amos, Gerald Amos, Steve Amos and Daren Amos & their Families. One sister, Geraldine Cole & one brother, Harlon (Betty) Amos.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents Norby & Flora (Phelps) Amos. His siblings, John Amos, Mabel Neilan, Lavela Williams and Melvin Amos. His children, Calvin Amos Sr., Kimberly Amos & Rochelle Amos.
