Carol Joy Manley was born on March 28, 1927 in Sisseton to Clifford and Veda (Faltonson) Manley. She grew up on the farm north of Sisseton, attended high school in Sisseton and graduated in 1945. She attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen for two summers to obtain her teaching certificate and taught in a country school (after her first summer) and in Hammer for 5 years where she was teacher, janitor, and lunch lady all in one.
Carol married Byron Pederson on May 29, 1948 at Nidaros Church, Hammer SD. For their first two years together they farmed in Minnesota Township and then moved to Enterprise Township (both in Roberts County). Carol gave piano lessons at her home and at the New Effington School while they lived on the farm. They moved to Sisseton in 1968. Soon after Carol began working in the Auditor's office at the Roberts County courthouse and then in the Clerk of Courts Office. After she and Byron retired in 1988, Carol accompanied numerous middle school band students for music recitals/competitions along with a variety of community musical groups.
Music has always been a part of Carol's life. She played organ for Nidaros Church for several years, taught piano lessons, played for church choir and musical groups. She was also very active with other community activities in Sisseton, and was a member of the Sisseton Square Dance Club for several years.
Carol was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Sisseton and served as Sunday school teacher, played for church choir and Sunday school for several years and was very active in the ladies aid and circle. Her love of music has been instilled in all 3 of her children.
Byron passed away in 2014 and Carol then moved to Edgewood Assisted Living for about 3 years before moving to the Browns Valley Care Center.
Carol passed away on October 19, 2019. Carol is survived by her two sons: Clayton and wife Mary Pederson of New York, NY and Gary and wife Ann Pederson of Sioux Falls, SD and one daughter, Lori and husband Steve Finnesand of Sisseton, SD, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Mary, and daughter Betty Ann who died in infancy.
The family asks for consideration of memorials to Nidaros Cemetery, a small rural cemetery that is only maintained by private donations and where Byron and Carol are both laid to rest.
