Carol Ann "Annie" Markhardt was born on September 18, 1940, south of White Lake, SD to Raymond and Mary (Holzhauser) Krumvieda. Annie spent most of her life farming alongside her dad and brother, Bernard, and caring for her immediate and extended family. On November 26, 1977, Annie married Eugene "Swede" Markhardt.
She will be remembered by so many as one of the hardest working women that they will ever meet. In addition to farming, Annie worked at the Mitchell Locker, and, in her later years, enjoyed cleaning pheasants each hunting season. After retiring from farming, she worked at the Aurora Brule Nursing Home as a housekeeper, which she did well into her 70s. When she did find time to relax, she enjoyed gardening and canning; she was always happy to share her bounty and enjoyed teaching others her methods. Annie's strong work ethic was instilled in the many family members she mentored and who loved to visit with her. She had opinions about everything, which she often shared; many will fondly remember her colorful anecdotes and witticisms. Given the opportunity, she loved to "tell you one thing right now!" Annie was content with the simple things in life, and enjoyed living in White Lake among family and friends.
She is survived by two daughters: Tina (Robert) Foote of Dousman, WI and Tanelle (Brian) Steichen of Sisseton, SD; four grandchildren: Alyssa Foote, Raychel (Harrison) Barton, Austin Steichen and Landyn Steichen; three sisters: Ella Ross of Sullivan, WI, Lois (Dan) Mathey of Lawton, IA, Marge (Vince) Johnson of Wessington Springs, SD; two brothers: Alvin Krumvieda and Russ (Gayle) Krumvieda of White Lake, SD; one sister-in-law: Lorraine (Ollie) Hanten of Platte, SD; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Eugene "Swede"; her parents: Ray and Mary; four sisters: Mary, Donna Lee, Norma and Betty; and three brothers: Dale, Bernard and Rich.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the White Lake Fire and Rescue Department, the caregivers at Edgewood Vista Assisted Living in Sisseton, SD or the caregivers at Tekakwitha Nursing Center in Sisseton, SD.
