Calvin Burdell Hanson was born April 13, 1930 in rural Day County, South Dakota, to John and Inga (Sanders) Hanson. He was baptized and confirmed. Calvin attended country school. He joined the United States Army in 1953 and was stationed at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He served in the Army until 1955 and attained Corporal status during that time.
On March 14, 1953 Calvin was united in marriage to Arlene Schrader at Webster, South Dakota. Calvin and Arlene resided in Peever, South Dakota until 1957 when they moved to the family farm west of Peever, in rural Roberts County, South Dakota. They were blessed with four children, Alan, Lori, James and Janet. Calvin and Arlene moved to Sisseton, South Dakota in 2012 and then to Rosholt, South Dakota in 2016.
Calvin farmed the land and raised cattle and sheep. He also worked at the Sisseton Livestock Auction for several years. He and Arlene enjoyed playing cards with friends over the years. Calvin also enjoyed playing cribbage. He loved to dance, especially the waltz. He liked his pets, particularly his dog, but despised the black birds that would eat the dog food that he'd put out and would shoot at them with the BB gun out the window! He could frequently be found in the "Machine Shed" on the farm tinkering with equipment. You could often hear Calvin whistling and he loved to tease his grandchildren! During his last years, he almost always had Werther's Original in the breast pocket of his shirt and loved a cold Mountain Dew!
Calvin was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Sisseton for many years, and most recently a member of Bethania Church in Rosholt. He was a long-time member of the Sisseton Americana Legion. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Calvin is survived by his wife Arlene of Rosholt, South Dakota, Alan (Patty) Hanson of Robins, Iowa, James (Cindi Strang) Hanson of Stanwood, Iowa, Lori (Mark Lackey) Jackson of Rosholt, South Dakota, and Janet (Kelly) Raguse of Wheaton, Minnesota; grandchildren Christopher (Anne) Hanson, Leah Hanson, Mason Lampe, Koby (April) Jackson, Keana Jackson, Kenzie Jackson and Kailey Jackson; sister Mrs. Joyce Hanson of Sisseton, South Dakota and sister in-law Janice Stewart of Clearlake, California.
Calvin joins his parents John and Inga in heaven.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the Countryside Inn Assisted Living, Rosholt, South Dakota, or the Sisseton American Legion. Special thanks to the wonderful, caring staff at Countryside Inn Assisted Living.
