Betty Jane Peterson, 86, of Sisseton, SD passed away peacefully on Sunday June 2, 2024, at the Tekakwitha Living Center, Sisseton, SD. Funeral Service will be on Friday, June 7, 2024, at Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, SD at 11:00 A.M. with visitation one hour prior to the service. Officiating will be Rev. Joshua Knudsen. Organist will be Ollie Yost and special music by Deliah Lehrke. Pallbearers will be Matthew Peterson, Darin Peterson, Colbey Lehrke, Derek Peterson, Calvin Thompson, and Terry Rolstad. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Auxiliary #50 and all of Betty's grandchildren and great grandchildren who were her "desserts in life". Interment will be at Saron Lutheran Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. There will be visitation on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at the Cahill Funeral Chapel from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. and visitation at the Grace Lutheran Church from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. with a 7:00 P.M. Prayer Service. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD, is in charge of arrangements.
Betty Jane Rolstad was born on December 22, 1937, at home in Enterprise Township, Robert County, South Dakota to Albert and Anna (Thurston) Rolstad. She was baptized and confirmed at Goodwill Lutheran Church. She went to country school by the farm and graduated from Sisseton High School in 1955. She then attended Northern State Teachers College. Betty was united in marriage to Gary A. Peterson on November 22, 1958. They began their life together in Veblen, SD before purchasing their farm in Long Hollow Township. Betty taught school at Enterprise Township before becoming a full-time farm wife. She loved the life outdoors whether it was working, hunting, or fishing. Betty loved to play cards with everyone. She spent hours playing with her grandchildren, showing them her competitive side. She lived to take care of her family. Another love of hers was feeding everyone, always making sure everyone's belly was full and sweet tooth satisfied. She had a witty sense of humor that could catch you off guard. She worked at the Boys and Girls Club, Sisseton Public School, Teal's Market and Tekakwitha Nursing Center in the food departments. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where she served on Council, a member of the Sisseton Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Auxiliary #50, Hills and Valley Riding Club.
Betty is survived by her children Mark Peterson of Sisseton, SD, Tamra Quinn of Tucson, Arizona, and Tracey (Sean) Lehrke of Sisseton, SD; one sister Florence Jacobson of Park Rapids, MN; brother-in-law Gordon D. Peterson of Sisseton, SD; 9 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Betty is preceded in death by her husband Gary A. Peterson; parents Albert and Anna (Thurston) Rolstad; brothers and wives Art and Delores Rolstad, Shorty and Mary Rolstad; sisters and husbands Agnes and Erling Jacobson, Hilma and Dean Thompson; brother-in-law Hilman Jacobson and daughter-in-law Robyn Peterson
