Funeral Mass for Bernice Lily Hopkins, Sina Duta Win "Red Shawl Woman" 82 of Waubay, SD will be held on Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. at the St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church, Sisseton, SD with Rev. Fr. Jerry Ranek, Rev. Les Campbell, Rev. Clifford Chanku, and Deacon Chet Cordell officiating. Pianist will be Kay Bursheim. Pallbearers will be Dominic Bear Hill, Phillip Smith, Jeremy Owen, Joey Bear Hill, Dallas Keeble, Kevin Roberts, Bob Grey Eagle, Bobby Cadotte, Daniel Bear Hill, and Eric Marx. Honorary Pallbearers will be Kateri Circle Members, Bingo Buddies, Geraldine Rencountre,
Lillian Owen, Teresa Peters, Celine Buckanaga, Theo Iron Cloud, Florestine Bobtail Bear, Louise Jones, Ruth Walking Bull, Alma Renville, Sandra Melius, Sharon Grey, Jo Roberts, Ione Eagle, Verna Sargeant, Valdeen Campbell, and Connie DeMarrias. Drum Group will be Thunder Bear. Interment will be in the Pickerel Lake Cemetery, Pickerel Lake, SD. There will be a Wake Service on Monday, August 3, 2015 at 7:00 PM at the Enemy Swim Cultural Center, Enemy Swim and an all-night Wake Service Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at 7:00 P.M. at the St. Kateri Tekakwitha Hall, Sisseton, SD. The Cahill Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Bernice Lily Grey was born on June 19, 1933 at Pickerel Lake to Phillip and Agnes (Eagle) Grey. Bernice attended Tekakwitha Orphanage from the 1st grade through the 8th grade. She grew up living in the Sica Hollow and Pickerel Lake Areas. In 1967, she moved to Waubay where she spent the rest of her life. She was married to Raymond Bear Hill and then later she married Arlan Hopkins. She worked at the Sisters of the Divine Savior as a cook. As a member of the Kateri circle for over thirty years, she got to travel to New York, California, Canada, and Seattle to name a few places. Her culture was very important to her. She practiced the Dakota Values in all aspects of her life and instilled these values in her children. She made sure all her children had a Dakota name. She belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary at Waubay, SD and the Oblates of St. Benidicts. Her hobbies were gardening, bingo, quilting, beading and cooking. Bernice passed away on August 1, 2015, suddenly and peacefully at her home in Waubay, SD.
Bernice is survived by nine children, Elizabeth Bear Hill of Waubay, SD, Mary HisLaw of Waubay, SD, Ray (Mona) Bear Hill of Waubay, SD, Clarice Bear Hill of Sisseton, SD, Jean (Daniel) Webb of Fulda, MN, Robert Bear Hill of Watertown, SD, Ronaleen Chute of Wolf Point, MT, Cheryl Bear Hill of Wolfe Point, MT, and Darla Danek of Watertown, SD; twenty eight grandchildren; sixty three great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Andrew ( Sharon) Grey of Waubay, SD, and Jonas Grey of Enemy Swim, SD; four sisters, Darlene (Gerald) Williams of Waubay, SD, Clarice ( Darcy) Medicine Stone of Twin Buttes, ND, Rose (Louie) DeCoteau of Solen, ND and Verzella Grey of Moorhead, MN.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip and Agnes Grey; husband, Raymond Bear Hill, husband, Arlan Hopkins; two daughters, Jolene Hopkins and Karen Huffstutler; infant Son Bear Hill, one sister, Claudette Grey; infant brother, Magnus Grey; two grandsons, Hiram Owen and Baby Joseph Bear Hill and one great grandson, Kaysen Running Hawk.
