Memorial Service for Augusta (Gustie) Elizabeth Horton, 93, of Sisseton, South Dakota will be held on Friday, August 24, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. at the Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD with memorial visitation starting at 12:00 P.M. until service time with Pastor Vern Donnell officiating. Soloist is Pat Schubert and organist is June Evenson. Urnbearers will be Donny Pallesen, Chris Pallesen, Ben Pallesen, Bobbi K. Horton, Sara Braun, Kelli Anderson, Kari Syverson. Honorary Urnbearers will be all of Gustie's grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, family and friends. Inurnment will be at the St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton, SD is in charge of arrangements.

Gustie Horton was born December 4, 1924 to Adolph & Emma Rinas in Roberts County, SD.  Gustie was the 3rd oldest of 9 children. She graduated from Sisseton high school, class of 1943. She met Harold ("Shorty") Horton when they both worked at Stavig Brothers Dept Store in Sisseton, and they later married in Browns Valley, MN.

Several years of their early married life were spent in Frederick, SD, where Shorty served as manager of a meat market and subsequently encouraged his wife to learn the techniques of managing meat for the local farmers.  They later returned to Sisseton and purchased the old Colonel Raft home on 4th and Pine where Shorty designed and helped build his own locker plant. They were known for their smoked meats, including bacon, ham, sausages and baloney. Many remember Gustie's annual Old English Meat Pork Pies, a specialty she perfected for Christmas at her husband's urging and his remembrance of an old Horton family recipe.

They had 8 children together: Beverly (Thomas) Moshier of Surprise, AZ; Carol (George) Singer of Calif; Bobby (Shirley) Horton of Sisseton; Jan (Dick) Macek of Los Alamos, NM; Cheryl Horton of Texas; Boni (Steven) George of Sisseton; Cindy (Steve) Pallesen of Sisseton; Tamara (Curt) of AZ.

Shorty passed away in 1967, and Gustie continued to work at the Horton's Locker with the help of her son and others until she eventually retired. She later took a job back at Stavig Brothers in the meat department.  She was well known to many area farmers and people near and far.  She worked very hard and supported the 5 younger children after Shorty's death. She later worked cutting steaks at the Sisseton Bowling Alley until 2011. Gustie was a great cook, very artistic, and had a green thumb when it came to gardening. She was very giving to others. She later moved to the Jard apartments and Edgewood Assisted Living Center. She enjoyed the company of old friends, business acquaintances and family, and listening to the word of God on TV.

Gustie is survived by her sisters; Ann Dubois, Freda Poyet, and Ellen Skarnagel, all of Sisseton, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, many nieces, cousins, family and friends.

Gustie was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Matthew Horton and parents, Adolph and Emma Rinas, sisters Anna Olga, Thelma and brothers Daniel, Franklin, and Michael.

Gustie and Shorty leave 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.  Her family remembers Gustie for instilling in them a strong sense of integrity and work ethic as well as Christian principles and belief in Jesus Christ as savior, healer and soon coming King.  We are all grateful for our Christian mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Gustie would remind everyone to "pray and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved.
