Obituary

Arthur G. Sather, 98, Sisseton, died Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at Tekakwitha Living Center, Sisseton, SD. Funeral Service will be held on Monday, July 20, 2009, 10:30 am at Grace Lutheran Church in Sisseton, SD with the Rev. William Scruba officiating. Organist will be Estelle Pearson and special music by the Grace Lutheran Men's Choir. Pallbearers are great nephews, Greyson Colvin, Coli Mullen, Erick Mullen, Terry Spiering, David Peterson, Randal Peterson and Evan Peterson. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Board of Directors of Roberts County Farm Mutual Insurance Company, Gene Kiefer, Herb Heesch, Harley Niles, Larry Lekness, Karen Gangle, Richard Aas, Dianne Larson and Glenda Leisinger. Interment will be in Scandia Cemetery, rural Sisseton, SD. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Sunday followed by a family prayer service at 7 P.M. at Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton.
Arthur George Sather was born July 8, 1911 in Hart Township, Roberts County to O.K. and Ragnhild (Bakke) Sather. He was baptized and confirmed in the Scandia Lutheran Free Church, rural Sisseton. He later became a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, SD. He attended the Viking Country School and graduated from Sisseton High School in 1930. Following high school he attended Ag classes before returning to the family farm in Hart Township where he operated a large farming and cattle operation for many years.
In 1947 he became the secretary-treasurer of Roberts County Farm Mutual Insurance Company until his retirement March 19, 1999. Gov. William Janklow and Mayor Jim Pearson issued a proclamation "Art Sather Day" for his 52 years of service in the insurance industry and his civic contributions.
He served from 1951-1954 as a State Representative. He was a former Mayor of Sisseton.
He was a member of the Fort Sisseton Restoration Committee, Sisseton Housing & Redevelopment Commission,Coteau Des Prairies Hospital Board and County Spokesman for the Heart Association, Art was appointed by William Janklow to the State Railroad Commission. He was a member of Glacial Lakes Association, and Grace Lutheran Church, men's group, council and choir and many other civic organizations.
Arthur is survived by one sister-in law Darleen Sather of Sisseton, SD, nieces and nephews: Marcia (Sherman) Peterson, Robert (Karen) Huebner, Marlene (Dennis) Colvin, Marilyn (Paul) Mullen, Cindy (Doug) Benzuly, Lou Spiering and great nieces and nephews.
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Reuben, Clifford and Palmer Sather, sisters, Rachel Melby, Esther Kennedy and Borghild Huebner. Nieces, Maxine Spiering, Lois Poland, nephew Larry Sather and great niece Tanya Wegleitner.
