Obituary

Funeral Mass for Alvina H. Opitz, 97, of Eden, South Dakota will be held on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at 10:30 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Eden, SD with Rev. Fr. Brian Simon Celebrant. Mary Wagner will be the organist and the Sacred Heart Church Choir will sing. Pallbearers are Jeffery Opitz, Mark Opitz, Danny Opitz, Craig Deutsch, Damian Deutsch, and Eric Hall. Honorary Pallbearers will be all of Alvina's Nieces and Nephews. Interment will be in the St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Eden, SD. There will be visitation on Thursday, April 25, 2019 one hour prior to the Funeral Mass. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Alvina H. Opitz was born on December 23, 1921 in Roslyn, SD to George and Ludmilla (Oroslan) Opitz. Alvina attended Nutley Township School Dist. #164 in Roslyn, SD from 1 st grade to 8 th grade and graduated from Roslyn High School in 1940. After graduation Alvina went to Webster, SD and attended Peabody School of Nursing and graduated in 1943 with a degree in RN Nursing. She then went on for advance training in O.R. Nursing at Abbott Hospital in Minneapolis, MN. Alvina spent her nursing career as an O.R. and Clinic Nurse all of her life, except the four years she spent as a school nurse at Sisseton Public School and eleven years at Sisseton USPH Clinic. She was the O.R. Supervisor at St. Mary's Hospital in Minneapolis, MN, Luther Hospital in Watertown, SD, County Hospital in Ridgecrest, CA, and Peabody Hospital in Webster, SD. Alvina was best known for all the years she spent at the Tekakwitha Hospital and Clinic in Sisseton. She loved to play cards, watch birds, fishing, spending time visiting with family and friends, and trips to the Casino were never turned down. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eden, SD a member of the Roslyn High School Alumni, the Peabody Hospital Nurses Alumni in Webster, SD, the National Association of O.R. Nurses, the South Dakota Nurses Association, Eden Lion's Club, was a service member for Community Health Nurses, a Board Member of Strand Kjorsvig Nursing Home in Roslyn, SD, and a member of the Strand Kjorsvig Foundation in Roslyn, SD. Alvina is the last living child of George and Ludmilla Opitz. She was a resident of the Browns Valley Health Center, Browns Valley, MN for the past several years. She passed away on Friday, April 12, 2019 at the Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND.

Alvina is survived by a sister-in-law Audery Opitz, of Luverne, MN; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and great-great nephews and nieces.

Alvina was preceded in death by her parents George and Ludmilla Opitz; three sisters and four brothers, Fredrick (Marjorie) Opitz, Ludmilla (Alois) Deutsch, Leonard Opitz, Leona (Albert) Deutsch, Olivia (Gerald) Opitz, Elwood Opitz and Herbert (Helen) Opitz.
