Obituary

Funeral Service for Alvin Sylvester Tuff, 86, a much loved resident of Peever, SD will be held on Thursday, April 2, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. at Peever Lutheran Church, Peever, SD with the Rev. Steve Moberg Officiating. Organist will be Mona Greseth and soloist will be Dan Witte. Pallbearers will be Landon, Chase and Evan Cutler, Jerad Tuff, Brian O'Connor and Tej Singh. Honorary pallbearers will be all of Alvin's family and friends. Interment will be in the Peever Cemetery, Peever, SD. There will be military rites by the Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50 and Fort Sisseton VFW Post #3342. There will be visitation on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 from 2:00 to 7:00 P.M. with a 7:00 P.M. sharing time with family and friends. There will be visitation on Thursday, one hour prior to services at the church. Alvin was born in Peever, SD on October 2, 1922 to Andrew and Blanche (Bailly) Tuff. He graduated from Peever High School in 1941; he worked in the CCC camps in Montana. He entered the United States Army on April 2, 1943 and served until February 13, 1946. He served in New Guinea during WWII and earned the rank of TEC 5. He was awarded, one overseas bar, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal with/1 Bronze Battle Star, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal. Alvin was united in marriage to Lorraine Lohre on June 12, 1948 at Webster, SD. They worked at Armours in Huron before starting Tuff's Service in Peever, South Dakota. Known for his dependable, economical service, generosity, good nature and quips, Alvin and his wife ran Tuff's Service Station for fifty one years. Alvin lived his philosophy, "It's the little things in life that count." He was happy being with his family and friends, working in his garage and dancing. He was a member of Peever Lutheran Church, and served as treasurer for several years. He was a member of Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50 and Fort Sisseton VFW Post #3342.
Alvin passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2009 at the Tekakwitha Living Center, Sisseton, SD of complications from Alzheimer's.
Alvin is survived by his wife of sixty years, Lorraine Tuff of Peever, SD, two daughters, June Tuff of Sioux Falls, SD, and Kathy and husband Brian O'Connor of Rapid City, SD, and one son, Donald and wife, Mary Tuff of Watertown, SD; one sister, Thelma Nielsen of Sisseton, SD; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Carol; two sisters, Lillian and Deloris; five brothers, Emmett, Clifford, Curtis, James and Gene.
