Alta Marie German was born on April 25, 1942 and was the fourth child of Parents John (Jack) L German and Amelia W (Owen) German. When she was born, they didn't think she was going to live, so the Nuns named her Katrina and the Father gave her last rites. Alta stayed with her grandmother Amanda Tiomanipi Owen, Aunt Rose Starlight and sister Rosella, when her mother and father were busy farming. She attended country school and graduated from Peever High School in 1961. She worked in the Roberts County Extension Office. She became the first Sisseton Wahpeton Sioux Tribal Extension Program Manager. Her job included ordering and distributing garden seeds and baby chicks for the tribal members and she coordinated the yearly Tribal Fair at the 4H grounds. Alta also made star quilts and taught many tribal members, including Delores (Dutchie) Barse and Jamie German, how to make star quilts. She lived with and cared for both of her parents until their deaths. She also cared for and helped raise her great niece Sharnell German, from the age of 2 years old until she was a teenager. When we were young Auntie Alta had a little trailer house behind Grandpa and Grandma's house and she let us little girls visit her there and listen to records and drink pop. It was so much fun. In 1984 she met the love of her life Francis (Punchie) Charging Cloud, and they were life partners until his passing in 2020. Alta passed away on September 1, 2026, at Coteau des Prairies Hospital, Sisseton, SD.

She is survived by hunka's Sharnell Grimm, Karla Witt, and Lola Gangone; many nieces and nephews which were like her own children; and many other relatives.

Alta is preceded by her parents John L. "Jack" and Amelia W. (Owen) German; grandparents Charlie and Amanda Tiomanipi-Owen and Rose Starlight; her siblings Gerald "Smokey" German Sr., Marlene Ironheart, Rosella Heminger, and Owen Dean German; and her life partner Francis "Punchie" Charging Cloud.
