Died: March 19, 2012

Funeral Service for Joe Leonard Navratil, 93, of New Effington, SD will be Saturday, March 24, 2012 at 10:30 AM at the Faith Lutheran Church, New Effington, SD with Rev. Harold Watrous officiating. Organist will be Debra Bredvik. Pallbearers will be Franklin and Roger Navratil, Bruce Tiegs, and Dwight, Mark, Barry and Jay Tasa. Honorary pallbearers will be “all of Joe’s nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews”. Interment will be in the Bohemian Cemetery, New Effington, SD. Military rites will be provided by the Read-Veflin American Legion Post #180. There will be visitation on Friday, March 23, 2012 from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM at the Cahill Funeral Chapel in Sisseton, SD.
Joe Leonard Navratil was born on January 11, 1919 in Lein Township, Roberts County, near New Effington, SD to Leopold and Mary (Martinek) Navratil. Joe attended school in New Effington and graduated from New Effington High School in 1939. After his education Joe farmed with his father and brothers. He entered the US Army and served from November 1944 until August 1946. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Army of Occupation Medal- Germany, Victory Medal , Two Overseas Bars, and the European-African Middle Eastern Theatre ribbon w/one Bronze Battle Star. Joe returned to the farm at New Effington and continued to farm with the family. The family owned the Hollywood Theater where Joe took tickets and ran the projector. Joe liked trapping, fishing, woodworking, collecting, photography, bowling, traveling and going to Casinos. The Navratil’s were the first in the area to have a snowmobile and color TV. Joe was also a past member of the Read-Veflin American Legion Post #180 and the New Effington Men’s Bowling Association. Joe entered the Rosholt Care Center in July 2001, and he loved to play bingo and pokeno. Joe passed away on March 19, 2012 at the Rosholt Care Center, Rosholt,
SD.
Joe is survived by one sister-in-law Ethel Buckhouse of Hankinson, ND and 17 nieces and nephews, Dorothy Hentz of Minneapolis, MN, Louise Bergstrom of Richfield, MN, Danny Navratil of Sisseton, SD, Franklin (Susanne) Navratil of New Effington, SD, Dixie Hubrig of Hankinson, ND, Peggy (Ron) Peterson of Buxton, ND, Cynthia (Bruce) Tiegs of Wahpeton, ND, Roger (Kathy) Navratil of New Effington, SD, Joyce (Bill) Winefeldt of Palisade, MN, Dwight Tasa of Rapid City, SD, Garnett e(Richard) Aas of Sisseton, SD, Mark (Ann) Tasa of Sisseton, SD, Kaye Cahill of Sisseton, SD, Faye (Robert) Johnston of Sisseton, SD, Barry (Radell) Tasa of Humphrey, NE, Millicent ( Kenneth) Hannasch of Sisseton, SD, and Jay (Rachel) Tasa of Sisseton, SD, and numerous great-nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, six sisters, Christine Navratil, Albina Kalina, Rosie Navratil, Mayme Navratil, Lillian Hentz, and Agnes Tasa, and five brothers, Frank, Steve, Wencil, Leo, and Edward.
